The Front Street Art Gallery features a “Coastal Adventures” show from through Sunday, June 21. Feel the coast surround you as you walk through the gallery – ocean dunes, sea breezes, morning sunrises and warm evening sunsets. Pick a painting or photograph to bring summer into your home. Featured artists are Kristen Barr and Marianne Buckley-Curran.
By creating representational landscape paintings, Barr strives to capture the natural elements in a vista. This often includes an image familiar to a town or people who may live there. The darks and the lights on a form and the feeling that the scene provokes in her, inspire her to recreate that very feeling in her art. Living by the ocean, she’s inspired by those feelings every day. She paints in oil because she loves the feel of placing thick rich paint on the canvas and then playing with it until she has achieved what she set out to do – to create an idyllic setting that someone can enjoy in their home. She attempts to capture changes in the weather and the light as it sets the tone for her painting.
Marianne Buckley-Curran feels as an artist she can capture a moment in time and convey it in a painting such that other people can reflect upon, experience and appreciate it. She strives for three things when creating a composition: first, express the idea, provide a clear message; second, the message must be delivered in a design that enhances and supports the objective; and third, but no less important, is the effect of light on the form, with local colors in conjunction with what she’s saying. For the past few years, Buckley-Curran has dedicated herself to the development of her personal artistic voice, stimulated visually as well as through the additional senses of smell, hearing, taste and touch felt by the sea.
